We use Spryker OS as the core of our e-commerce Webshop. The software architecture based on a modular monolithic is well designed, and a healthy and active community in Slack is keen to help you anytime.
  • Modular software architecture
  • Reusable quality software
  • Fun and modern tech
  • Better OSS user experience
If you need an online shop that deals with a large load of orders and shipments, Spryker has you well covered. But there is a hard and complex learning curve you need to be aware of, you need to be able to invest in that learning for yourself and your team. It will take some time, but it will surely pay off.

We use it as an e-commerce solution in a complex environment with lots of legacy systems
  • Extendable
  • Open Code
  • High end business Features
  • Documentation
  • Fluctuation in contact persons
  • Steep learning curve
Spryker Cloud Commerce OS fills the gap between standard shop systems (which lack many great business features) and closed high-end enterprise solutions that aren't easy to extend or implement

Spryker CCOS is a solution I am positioning at our customers in an eCommerce or transactional business context and we implement Spryker especially for complex B2B cases around digital transformation. Especially for our customers dealing with more complex products, niche players, and hidden champions establishing a webshop, Spryker is usually a great fit.
  • Combination of Headless and API makes Spryker a good fit for different frontends, especially cool for more innovative digital business cases.
  • Great Partner Management and assets to support our consulting and sales process.
  • Continuous improvement of capabilities and OOTB features.
  • Needs a rather big initial time investment to learn the software by developers but a steep learning curve makes up for it.
  • Sometimes hard to position outside of Germany, brand awareness of Spryker outside Germany could be bigger.
Great for customers who want to customize their webshop to a certain degree but not go for custom development, customers who really know what they want in terms of functionalities have the advantage to only pay for capabilities they actually need and get regular updates...

We implement solutions for customers based on individual requirements. Our customers facing different B2B problems which can be solved in different ways; we combine all required components individually.
  • Separate frontend and backend tasks (jobs).
  • Technical system abstraction (container components).
  • Technology separation between frontend and other backend components.
  • Update and maintenance over the customer product lifecycle.
  • Internal API improvements.
It depends on the customer requirements which product (not Spryker) maybe is a better solution for a start of a project. Important here is also the project setup on the client-side (project team, budget, etc.).

Spryker is used in our dedicated Spryker department/business-unit. The department uses Spryker to develop E-Commerce solutions for our customers in different fields ranging from both B2B and B2C cases.
  • Highly customizable
  • Demoshop for B2B and B2C help starting development
  • Modern technology stack
  • A lot of patterns that enable clean and readable code
  • High learning curve
  • Small community
Spryker is well suited for huge projects that require a solid infrastructure and scalability. Especially unique use-cases benefit from spryker's customizability and possibilities. Thanks to the well structured REST-API it's possible to develop non-traditional frontends that do not require a browser.

At NFQ Asia, we use Spryker to build e-commerce solutions for some clients. The Spryker Commerce OS solves different problems on both B2B and B2C shops. It establishes a standard of organising the codebase structure, designing our database, connecting to third-party applications, etc... Furthermore, Spryker Commerce OS is highly flexible, allowing us to customise the shop to the varying needs of our clients. There are also many pre-built packages that we can start using immediately with a minimum effort for configuration.
  • Well structured codebase architecture.
  • Flexible to extend.
  • A good built-in solution for search.
  • The state machine for business processes.
  • The default implementation is already scalable.
  • Support multi stores.
  • The documentation and developer bootcamp is sometimes out-of-date.
  • Open code, not open source, all bugs need to be submitted to an internal system without accepting patches from communities.
  • Steep learning curve.
  • The bridges at the core level sometimes cause difficulties in project-level implementation.
It is well suited for medium to large shops that need to connect to different external systems (PIM, CMS, CRM, OMS, etc...). The Spryker architecture makes it plays nicely with varying models of deployment. However, both software engineers and DevOps engineers have a steep learning curve to develop the Spryker shop correctly. This solution may not be the answer for small businesses that want a lightweight e-commerce solution.

At TOWA we are using the Spryker Cloud Commerce OS for more complex and bigger scale e-commerce enterprise projects. Currently, it's our standard framework for that kind of software project to help our clients to go into the digital market. The projects normally involve the integration of 3rd party services like PIM, ERP or other systems. We do have 2 dedicated teams to work with Spryker Cloud Commerce OS at the moment and we are growing.
  • Best Practices integrated into the framework like SOLID Principles, Enterprise Architecture Design Pattern, etc
  • Clear structure of the system components (zed, yves, glue, middleware, ...)
  • Migration Guidelines for the available modules
  • Number of modules
  • Documentation which is getting better
  • Current Documentation
  • Developer Bootcamp
  • Eco-System for finding already existing custom modules
For enterprise level software projects Spryker Cloud Commerce OS seems to be a good fit. It's recommended to check the requirements and limits of Spryker dough. Until now we do have good experience in solving our client problems and developing them with Spryker.

Currently it seems that a highly-data oriented e-commerce project scratches the limits of Spryker Cloud Commerce OS. In those scenarios we would recommend checking the exact requirements.

We use Spryker Cloud Commerce OS to build scalable industry platforms for our clients in B2B and B2C. Especially for projects which require a high degree of customization and individual business processes while fast-time-to-market we recommend Spryker too. Due to its modularity, Spryker allows flexibility and is easily adaptable to individual use cases.
  • Spryker helps to achieve fast time to market.
  • Mapping of complex business processes is feasible with the state machine.
  • Highly customizable and scalable, especially relevant for industry platforms and marketplaces.
  • Steep learning curve, experienced developer team needed.
  • CMS functionality could be improved.
Spryker is well suited for projects, which require specific processes like platforms and marketplaces with the goal to scale. Less appropriate for building standard shops, where no customization is needed.

It is being used in many projects. Mainly for eShop creation, customer satisfaction portal creation, etc.
It resolved problems like painful code review and difficult architecture decisions. Spryker’s modular software structure and the separation of backend and frontend interfaces (smartphone, desktop, voice, IoT applications) stand behind these capabilities, ensuring the highest possible performance and enabling agile project execution. For companies with digitization projects, Spryker replaces the standard solutions of software companies to drive IT innovations faster and more efficiently.
  • Strong architecture enforcement.
  • High frontend speed.
  • Less painful code reviews.
  • Steep learning curve.
  • Heavy vagrant-based setup, docker/SDK solution enabled smoother local environment setup.
  • Missing CMS implementation out of the box to choose for the project.
It is well suited for eCommerce.

<div>As an agency, we implement complex eCommerce solutions for our customers - Spryker serves as the operating system and forms the basis for the eCommerce processes. Spryker is implemented company-wide and puts a digital layer over the existing business model. Pros
When you want to implement something quickly. If you have complex business processes and backend structures. If you want to use state of the art commerce technology.

Spryker is used by our multinational online shopping platform, which has a steadily growing range of several million products. Our largest customer is an international shopping community that unites 15 million shoppers and 150,000 merchants in over 50 countries. It was therefore clear to us that we needed the best software solution available on the market in order to run our e-commerce system. That's why we decided to switch to Spyker.
  • The modularization provides the flexibility we need.
  • High scalability.
  • The support team is very friendly and helpful.
  • The learning curve is quite steep.
  • Probably not the best solutions for small businesses.
Spryker is certainly a very good choice for huge e-commerce businesses that deal or intend to deal with thousands of merchants and millions of customers and products. However, for small businesses with inexperienced software developers, Spyker Cloud Commerce OS is probably way too complex.

We are an integrator for Spryker Cloud Commerce OS, and work with the system for more than 2 years now, to provide our clients a solid, stable and extendable platform for their E-Business. My personal involvement is focused on transforming complex B2B-sales models into an online platform, to connect our clients with their clients.
  • Extendable - you can extend the core functionalities to every business need.
  • Scalable - the technical implementation supports a highly scalable system approach.
  • Adjustable - besides implementing new functionalities the core functionalities can be adjusted to the business needs.
  • Up-to-date - compared to other E-Business solutions, the technological foundation of Spryker is growing, with the technological development and implementations [which] are kept up-to-date with quarterly releases.
  • Content - content administration is not a strong part of Spryker, although it improved over the years. I still see room for improvement in the world of bigger CMS systems being able to also do "commerce".
  • Backoffice-usability - for non-technical users the first few days, weeks and month[s] can be full of surprises. An extended documentation, or more intuitive handling on the backoffice could serve every party on Spryker.
  • Off-the-shelf internationalization - Spryker right now comes with an initial data set in English and German, which is for a German based company already a pretty stable starting point. Extension on the base data for Europe-wide used countries would be very helpful - French, Italian, Polish, Russian, etc.
From my experience, I categorise client businesses right now in two groups, Spryker-ready and "just not suitable". These two categories are based on the technical background which come with the clients business. If the business seems to be very simple on the outside, but has a lot of technical dependencies, connections and input resources, I would instantly go for Spryker as the architecture and way to implement "data driven" projects - is just supporting the way of consuming "endless endpoints," and present them in a simple way for the clients' customer to pursue the E-business.

On the other hand, projects which have no big technical background but a more complex, or "fancier" presentation, I would recommend a simpler and easier to adjust framework as the overhead are not worth it and the capabilities of Spryker won't be used fully.

We use Spryker Cloud Commerce OS for large-scale e-commerce system development with various businesses' specific custom requirements. Spryker Cloud Commerce OS allows a quick start for new projects and offers out of the box standard e-commerce features with the possibility to adjust everything based on business needs. It has well-defined and implemented architectural decisions that help in development as well as for product support, late life cycles, and maintainability.
  • Great and clean code base acting as reference point and documentation
  • Well-defined architecture enabling quick long-term development
  • Lots of modules providing standard e-commerce features mostly out of the box
  • Extendable and future-proof design
  • Steep learning curve
  • Requires experienced developers
  • Not suitable for small business/project
For long-term large e-commerce (or feature-heavy) projects Spryker Cloud Commerce OS is a great choice, as its architectural decisions help to keep up development pace in late phases of the project. It has one of the cleanest code bases acting as a reference as well as documentation for developers. If multiple projects are developed with Spryker Cloud Commerce OS, the team can be interchangeable, as the architecture ensures unified project layout. However, Spryker Cloud Commerce OS has its use cases--I wouldn't recommend it for small projects or without having experienced developers to work on it.

We use Spryker Cloud Commerce OS as a base for an e-commerce platform focused on craftsmen. Its modularity enables us to solve complex business and integration problems by adapting the software to the process instead of adapting the process to a standard software. The clean structure and solid code base help our developers to focus on delivering features and solving problems and gives a very good base to work with.
  • Clean architecture
  • Maintainability
  • Fast development on Spryker's side
  • Release communication
  • Version migrations
  • Database handling
  • Performance in some areas
Spryker Cloud Commerce OS is perfectly suited for complex business cases where the technology is only a base for innovation and continuous improvement is part of the business strategy.

For a simple shop which should be set up once and then just run without further investments, I wouldn't use Spryker Cloud Commerce OS. Instead I'd use a standard software like Magento or Shopware.

Using Spryker Cloud Commerce OS comes with a significant learning curve for PHP developers and needs continuous development and maintenance effort. So if you are not willing to invest into a few good developers or a good agency with a longer time horizon, you'd better choose different software.
